What Is an International Driving Permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official translation of your domestic driver’s license into multiple languages. It is recognized in over 150 countries under the 1949 and 1968 Geneva/Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic.
Important: An IDP is not a standalone license. You must always carry your original domestic license alongside it.
Do You Need One?
Whether you need an IDP depends on your home country and your destination:
- Japan — Required for all foreign drivers (except those with a Japanese translation of their license)
- Italy — Required by law; rental companies will refuse service without one
- Thailand — Officially required; enforcement varies but strongly recommended
- Germany — Not required for EU license holders; required for most others
- United States — Not legally required for short visits, but recommended
- Australia — Required if your license is not in English
Rule of thumb: If your license is not in the local language or English, get an IDP. Even when not legally required, it speeds up rental car pickups and police checkpoints.
How to Get an IDP
In the United States
- Apply through AAA (American Automobile Association)
- Cost: ~$20
- Processing: Same-day at AAA offices, or 4–6 weeks by mail
- You’ll need: completed application, two passport-size photos, a copy of your valid license
In the United Kingdom
- Apply through Post Office or AA
- Cost: ~£5.50
- Processing: Instant at Post Office counters
In Australia
- Apply through AAA member clubs (NRMA, RACV, etc.)
- Cost: ~AUD $39
- Processing: Same day at offices
In Canada
- Apply through CAA (Canadian Automobile Association)
- Cost: ~CAD $25
Common Mistakes
- Getting an IDP from the wrong country — You must obtain it from your country of residence before traveling
- Forgetting your original license — An IDP without the original is invalid
- Assuming it replaces local requirements — Some countries require additional permits or translations
- Letting it expire — IDPs are valid for only 1 year from the date of issue
- Buying from unofficial websites — Only get IDPs from authorized automobile associations; many “online IDP” sites are scams
IDP vs. License Translation
Some countries (notably Japan) accept an official translation of your license instead of an IDP. Check the specific country guide on drivingin.world for details.
