What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document that translates your domestic driving licence into multiple languages. It is not a standalone licence — you must always carry your original licence alongside the IDP.

IDPs are issued by your home country's automobile association (e.g. AAA in the US, RAC/AA in the UK, JAF in Japan). They are typically valid for one year and cost around $20–$30.

Key points:

  • Always obtain your IDP before leaving your home country
  • An IDP does not replace your driving licence — carry both
  • Some countries accept foreign licences without an IDP for short visits
  • Car rental companies may require an IDP even if local law doesn't
  • There are two IDP conventions: 1949 (Geneva) and 1968 (Vienna) — check which your destination accepts
