Route conditions tool

Can this route segment stay on your plan?

Turn road notices, weather exposure and practical limits into a dated segment decision with a clear moment to check again and a safe way to turn back.

Build a weather-aware route plan

Use one record for each road section, pass, ferry approach or exposed connection. Keep the source, forecast window and operational decision together so a changing road condition does not disappear inside a long itinerary.

Runs in this browser only. Route names, dates, notes, vehicle details and evidence are not sent to a network service or saved in local storage.

Record each section separately

Describe the exact segment, travel window, official road status, closure pattern, weather exposure, terrain, vehicle limits, turn-back trigger and fallback.

Enter only the route facts you have checked or the uncertainty you still need to resolve. A feasible result is a planning record, not a guarantee that conditions or a road authority decision will remain unchanged.

Prints the route records, decision counts, exposure watchlist and open verification checklist.

Plan the segment, not just the destination

A route can be technically open and still be a poor plan for a particular vehicle, weather window or daylight period. The official road status is one input; exposure, terrain, equipment and a practical exit condition belong in the same decision.

Use one row for each meaningful change in road character. Save the source and next check time, then name the point at which you will turn back, stop or switch to the fallback instead of improvising after conditions deteriorate.

1. Split at the risk change

Create separate records for an exposed pass, unsealed section, ferry approach, avalanche zone or long gap between services. A single route total can hide the one section that controls the day.

2. Match the real window

Record the date and driving window you actually expect. Compare the official road notice and weather warning with daylight, temperature, visibility and the vehicle or equipment you will have.

3. Decide the exit before entry

Write a trigger that a driver can recognise, plus a road, accommodation or resupply fallback. The decision can then change from feasible to reroute without losing the reason.

Official and authoritative references

These references explain where to begin a source check. They are not a live condition feed for every road; the responsible road authority, weather service and local operator control the final decision.

  • Your Europe: Driving abroadOfficial European travel guidance for country rules, documents, insurance and driving with a foreign-registered vehicle.
  • Meteoalarm: European weather warningsA network of national meteorological services that presents weather warnings by area. Follow the responsible national service for the detailed forecast and advice.
  • European Commission: Road safetyOfficial road-safety context for adapting speed and driving decisions to road, vehicle and environmental conditions.
  • GOV.UK Highway Code: Weather conditionsAn official driving reference covering rain, ice, snow, fog and strong wind; use the local authority's rules and warnings for the route you plan to drive.

Route weather planner questions

Does this tool provide live road closures or a weather forecast?

No. It deliberately has no network lookup. Enter the latest information you have checked with the responsible road authority, weather service or operator, then set a next check time so the record does not look permanently current.

Why make a separate record for each route segment?

Conditions often change at a pass, unsealed section, ferry approach or service gap. Splitting the route keeps the one high-risk section from being hidden by a broad route name or a single destination-level decision.

What should I do when a road authority notice and another source disagree?

Choose Conflicting notices or Resolve conflicting evidence, keep both references in the evidence note, and contact the authority or operator that controls the road. Do not count the segment as feasible while the conflict remains.

Should Unknown be treated as open?

No. Unknown means the source check is incomplete. Keep the segment in the verification list, set a next check time and use the turn-back and fallback fields to define what happens if you cannot confirm it.

Can I use this for a rental car or a mountain road?

Yes, as a planning worksheet. Record the rental company's restrictions, tyre or chain requirements, clearance and weight limits, daylight window and a concrete turn-back trigger. The tool does not interpret your contract or guarantee that equipment is available.
