Brazil’s road network spans busy urban expressways, tolled concessions and long rural highways. A workable self-drive plan starts with one region, one rental contract and a clear way to pay every toll linked to the plate.

Choose one region for the rental
Avoid building a first trip around several distant states. Domestic flights and separate rentals can remove long highway transfers and one-way fees.
Give the rental company the states, federal roads and any ferry or unpaved branch. Ask about geographic limits, kilometre allowance and roadside-assistance coverage.
Inspect the assigned car
Photograph the panels, bumpers, wheels, tyres, glass, roof edge, odometer and fuel level. Check the spare or repair kit, warning equipment and assistance number.
Test lights, locks and air conditioning before leaving. Report a fault while you remain close to the depot.
Confirm the toll account
Ask whether the car has an active tag, how the company bills plate-based passages and what administration fee applies. Record the plate number shown on the agreement.
Understand Free Flow before the first gantry
ANTT describes Free Flow as electronic tolling without booths or barriers. Gantries read a tag or number plate while the vehicle continues at the signed speed.
The system remains active in 2026 and payment is mandatory on roads that use it. Rollout is gradual, so one trip may encounter Free Flow, conventional plazas and roads without tolls.
Let the rental company explain payment
The driver of a private car without a tag may use the operator’s payment channel, but a rental plate belongs to the fleet account. Follow the rental company’s written process to avoid paying twice or missing its deadline.
Keep the agreement and final invoice. Ask for the road, gantry and passage date when a later charge appears.
Continue through the gantry
Do not brake sharply, stop or reverse to look for a booth. A Free Flow structure records the passage while traffic moves.
Check the federal road and concession
DNIT publishes management reports and condition information for federal roads under its administration. Concession operators maintain separate traffic, works and toll channels.
Identify who operates the route before departure. Check recent alerts, weather and the next fuel stop rather than relying on a generic road colour in navigation software.
Drive rural stages in daylight
Road works, animals, slow vehicles and damaged shoulders become harder to judge after dark. Set a latest departure time based on arrival, not on the attraction’s closing time.
The Federal Highway Police advises drivers to rest, use seat belts, respect signs and avoid phone use. Its emergency number on federal roads is 191.
Stop only where the car clears the lane
Use staffed fuel stations, recognised services and signed viewpoints. A shoulder beside a curve does not provide a safe photography stop.
Refuel before a long branch rather than after the warning light appears. Save two staffed alternatives and their direction of travel, since a divided highway may place the visible station on the inaccessible carriageway. Take a proper rest break instead of treating fuel and food as a quick roadside pause.
Plan parking before entering a city
Ask the lodging for a named garage, height limit and entrance instructions. Move luggage into the room before sightseeing.
Read the sign at the parked car, including hours and local restrictions. A parking suggestion in an app can be outdated or refer to a private space.
Keep route decisions off the phone
Mount the phone before moving and let a passenger handle changes. If the route becomes unclear, enter a legal parking place before checking it.

Remove the last optional stop
When traffic or weather delays the day, drive to the booked base. A fixed daylight arrival gives the driver one clear decision instead of repeated time estimates.
Return with toll and condition evidence
Refuel according to the agreement and allow time for an attended inspection. Photograph the body, wheels, glass, odometer and gauge in the return area.
Retain the signed condition report, toll invoice and fuel receipt until the deposit clears. The Costa Verde itinerary applies the toll process to the BR-101 corridor.
