Croatia’s motorways use both open and closed toll systems. On a closed section, a driver takes a ticket at entry and pays for the distance and vehicle category at exit. There is no single nationwide visitor vignette to buy before the trip.

Know which toll system you entered
Croatian Motorways, HAC, describes an open system with a fixed charge at a station and a closed system based on entry point, exit point and vehicle category. Signs and lane equipment show which process applies.
At a closed-system entrance, take the ticket and keep it flat and dry. Do not follow another vehicle through an electronic-only lane unless the assigned car carries a working ENC device and the rental company has explained its use.
Pay in the lane shown for your method
HAC accepts cash, cards and ENC under its published payment rules. Lane availability can vary by plaza. Slow early, read the overhead symbol and keep enough distance to change lanes safely.
Ask the rental desk whether the car has an ENC tag. Record the device number or indicator and ask how the company bills its use. A plastic unit on the windscreen is not proof that the account is active.
Keep the ticket until the barrier opens
If the ticket is lost or unreadable, use the assistance button and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not reverse or walk between lanes. Retain the receipt until the rental is closed.
Confirm the vehicle category
Toll categories depend on factors including axles, height and permissible mass. A tall van, camper or vehicle with a trailer can cost more than a passenger car.
Use the assigned vehicle’s registration details, not a booking photo, when checking a category. A branch substitution may change the toll class.
Separate road charges from bridge facts
Most motorway charges come from the tolled network. The Pelješac Bridge itself is toll-free. A route may still use tolled motorway sections before or after it.
Navigation settings that “avoid tolls” can add slow local roads. Compare the actual fee and time rather than treating every charge as something to escape.
Save the operator table offline
Record the likely entry and exit plazas before a long stage. Prices and classifications can change, so use HAC’s current calculator or table close to departure.
Treat a vehicle ferry as a separate booking
Passenger access does not guarantee space for a car. Check the exact route, date, vehicle dimensions, plate and arrival time with the ferry operator. Some local lines take vehicles; others do not.
Tell the rental company about every planned crossing and obtain written permission. Insurance, breakdown recovery and replacement transport can have separate island or ferry conditions.
Enter the vehicle details accurately
Use the actual registration and measured vehicle class once the rental is assigned. If the branch supplies a larger van, update the booking before reaching the port.
Arrive in the signed vehicle queue with tickets and identity documents ready. Port staff, not the navigation app, decide the loading order.
Secure the car as instructed
Apply the parking procedure directed by crew, close windows and take essential documents with you. Access to the vehicle deck may be restricted during sailing.
Check wind, fire and road notices
HAK publishes current road conditions, closures and border information. Coastal wind can restrict high-sided vehicles, trailers or all traffic on exposed roads and bridges.
Review HAK before departure and after a weather change. A road being open to passenger cars does not mean it is open to every vehicle class.
Keep one all-road alternative
For Split to Dubrovnik, the Pelješac Bridge provides a route that stays within Croatia. It reduces the need for a Bosnia and Herzegovina border transit, but local works or incidents can still require a different plan.
If your itinerary does cross a border, obtain rental permission, insurance and documents in advance. Do not discover the restriction at the checkpoint.
Stop only in a real parking area
Coastal pull-offs fill quickly and may leave little room beside traffic. Continue to the next marked space if the car cannot sit fully outside the lane.
Close the rental with a paper trail
Photograph the car, plate, dashboard, fuel gauge and return bay. Keep toll and ferry receipts beside the rental agreement until the final card statement settles.

Record a disputed charge promptly
If a barrier, ticket or ENC device fails, note the time, plaza and lane. Ask the operator for a receipt or reference before leaving when it is safe to do so.
Recheck before a future trip
Toll prices, lane systems, ferry schedules and rental contracts change. Repeat the checks even if you drove the same route last year.
