India is not one driving environment. A controlled expressway, a market road, a Western Ghats climb and a city junction require different speeds and expectations, often within the same day.
Start with the India driving overview. This guide covers the documents, rental checks, FASTag account and road choices that matter when arranging India car rental as a visitor.
Bring the IDP that India recognises
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways says a foreign licence alone does not authorise a visitor to drive in India. A visitor may drive the vehicle category shown on an IDP issued by a country that is party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, for as long as that permit remains valid.
Obtain the permit from the authorised issuer in the licence country before travel. Carry it with the original domestic licence and passport; the IDP is a translation document, not a replacement licence.
Get the pickup branch’s written answer
Send the issuing country, convention, vehicle category and travel dates before paying. Ask the branch to confirm that it will release the specific class of vehicle against those originals.
Every driver belongs on the rental agreement. Check the minimum age, deposit, geographic limits and whether crossing a state border needs advance notice.
Do not buy an “international licence” online
Commercial cards sold without a national licensing authority are not the official permit described by MoRTH. The international driving permit guide explains how to identify the correct issuer.
Inspect the car for the planned state and road
Document the panels, glass, wheels, odometer and fuel level. Test the lights, horn, wipers, air-conditioning, spare or repair kit and every occupied seat belt.
Ask what the insurance excludes. Tyres, wheels, underbody damage, floods, unsealed roads and hill routes can sit outside ordinary collision protection.
Save the vehicle papers
Confirm that the registration and insurance documents are in the car and that the branch provides a roadside-assistance number. Keep the return address and contract offline.
Do not accept a handover where the registration plate, contract vehicle and actual car do not match.
Choose an attended return
Plan to return during branch hours. Photograph the same areas again, obtain a receipt and keep the toll and fuel records until the deposit clears.
Treat FASTag as part of the assigned vehicle
FASTag is tied to the vehicle registration and fixed to the windscreen. NHAI’s guidance requires the vehicle registration certificate and a mapped tag; its annual-pass terms also state that the pass is not transferable.
For a rental car, do not open, replace or reassign the tag. Ask whether it is active, how the balance is maintained, what happens after a toll passage and which administration fee appears on the final invoice.
Photograph the opening status
Ask the branch to show that the tag is active and note any opening balance or rental toll package. A dashboard or account screenshot is useful if a later invoice duplicates a passage.
Use NHAI’s toll-information service for the named plaza and vehicle class. Do not budget from a generic per-kilometre figure when operators and road sections differ.
Ignore the annual pass for a normal rental
The annual pass is linked to an eligible non-commercial vehicle and its registered FASTag. A short-term renter should not purchase or modify that account without the owner’s written instruction.
Drive a steady line through mixed traffic
India drives on the left. Expect motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, buses, pedestrians, animals and stopped vehicles to use different parts of the road.
Signal early and avoid sudden lateral movement. A horn can announce presence, but it does not give permission to pass or enter a junction.
Let buses and trucks create space
Leave a large following gap. A bus may stop for a passenger without a formal bay, and a truck can hide a motorcycle or animal ahead.
Pass only with clear markings, a full view and enough space to return without pushing another road user aside. Never follow a local car blindly into the same gap.
Finish unfamiliar roads before dark
Headlight glare, unlit vehicles and people at the road edge raise the workload. Set a latest departure and remove the optional stop once it threatens daylight arrival.
Check the road, weather and state notices
NHAI’s toll-information system covers national-highway plazas and facilities, but local closures and weather controls may come from the state or district authority. Check the named road rather than asking only whether “the highway” is open.
During heavy rain, turn around when water hides the surface or road edge. Do not follow a larger vehicle through water whose depth is unknown.
Keep the route regional
A one-week self-drive trip should stay within one state or a compact neighbouring region. Long interstate routes add toll systems, fatigue and unfamiliar local restrictions without improving the trip.

Price a chauffeur-driven car too
In dense cities or for a route with continuous long stages, a licensed car with driver can be the safer and more useful option. Compare it before booking, not after the first difficult day.
