Kenyan law gives short-term visitors more than one licence route. A valid foreign domestic licence can be recognised for up to 90 days, while a 1968 Vienna Convention International Driving Permit is recognised when carried with the corresponding domestic licence. Translation rules matter when the original is not in English.
Those legal routes do not decide whether Kenya car rental is right for a particular safari plan. The rental contract, recovery coverage, park-road permission and vehicle type still control the practical risk. Read the Kenya driving overview before comparing vehicles.
Match the licence to the 90-day rule
Kenya’s 2020 driving-licence rules recognise a foreign domestic licence for 90 days. They also recognise a 1968 Vienna IDP when it is accompanied by the matching domestic licence.
If the domestic licence is not in English and the holder does not carry a recognised IDP, the rules provide for a translation. Confirm the acceptable translation and your exact documents with the rental branch before payment.
Carry arrival evidence
The 90-day period depends on the visitor’s arrival. Carry the passport and entry record with the original licence. An IDP does not extend an expired domestic licence or add a different vehicle category.
Ask the branch to confirm that its insurer accepts the document combination and dates. Save the reply offline.
Add every driver
Each driver should appear on the agreement and provide the required documents. Safari fatigue is a reason to share driving legally, not to pass the wheel informally.
Choose the vehicle for recovery, not status
A standard car may suit Nairobi, Naivasha and paved regional roads in fair conditions. It is not automatically suitable for every park track. Ask the rental company which parks and road surfaces are permitted and what happens after a puncture, grounding or weather closure.
Read the exclusions
Check the damage excess and third-party limit. Look for exclusions covering tyres, wheels, glass, roof, underbody, water, off-road travel and animal damage. The rental insurance guide helps separate the rental waiver from external cover.
Photograph the body, wheels, windscreen, odometer and fuel gauge. Verify two usable spare wheels if the operator promises them, along with the jack, wheel brace and warning triangle.
Test support coverage
Ask whether recovery enters national parks and how after-hours assistance works. Save the branch, insurer and recovery numbers where they remain available without mobile data.
Know the Nairobi Expressway payment lane
The Nairobi Expressway offers electronic toll collection with an onboard unit and manual toll collection using methods described by the operator, including its card and local payments. Ask what the assigned rental car carries and which lane to use.
Do not create or alter an account for a fleet vehicle. Keep any receipt and ask whether the rental company later adds an administration charge.
Plan the exit before entering
Confirm the required interchange and destination side before joining. A missed exit can add a substantial urban detour. The expressway also excludes motorcycles and three-wheelers, so do not assume every rented vehicle class can use it.
Save the operator’s current support number and check its notices on the travel day. Payment methods and operations can change.
Keep Nairobi car-light
Use a transfer or taxi for a central-city stay and collect the rental when the regional route begins. This reduces parking and traffic exposure without losing the useful part of the road trip.
Follow park rules literally
Kenya Wildlife Service publishes clear driving rules for parks including Lake Nakuru and Nairobi National Park. Gates operate in daylight hours, vehicles should remain on established roads, off-road driving is prohibited and the stated maximum speed is 40 km/h.
Stay in the vehicle except at a designated place. Wildlife has priority; stop at a distance and never use the horn to move an animal.
Turn around before the gate deadline
Work backwards from the closing time, allowing for a slow animal sighting, a blocked track and the drive to the exit. A sighting is not an excuse to remain after hours.
Park roads may change after rain. Ask at the gate which tracks are open and suitable for the vehicle. A navigation line does not override a ranger or barrier.
Give wildlife an escape route
Stop with space between vehicles and avoid surrounding an animal. Do not leave the road for a photograph. The Rift Valley lakes route uses park days from stable bases rather than racing between gates.
Finish with a documented handover
Refuel at an established station before the gauge becomes low. Avoid unfamiliar intercity driving after dark because pedestrians, livestock, stopped vehicles and surface damage are harder to see.
Use an attended handover
Repeat the collection photographs and obtain a signed record of fuel, damage and pending tolls. Keep park receipts and recovery correspondence until the deposit clears.
Reconfirm before travel
Licence recognition, expressway payment and park access can change. Check the assigned vehicle, dates and current gate advice shortly before departure.
