Mexico has free federal roads marked libre and tolled motorways marked cuota. A rental journey works best when you choose the road class before departure, confirm how the assigned car pays and leave enough daylight for the final approach.

Confirm the rental payment process
Ask the branch whether the car carries IAVE, PASE or another electronic toll tag. Request the billing method, administrative fee, posting delay and proof supplied after return.
Some booths accept cash, while electronic lanes require a compatible funded tag. Carry pesos in small denominations even when the contract includes a device, and keep each receipt until the rental closes.

Record the assigned plate and tag
Photograph the plate, windscreen tag, dashboard mileage, fuel level and existing body damage. Ask the agent to show which lane the device uses.
Do not move a tag between vehicles. CAPUFE describes IAVE as an automatic vehicle-identification system connected to an account and accepted on participating roads.
Check the route, not a national estimate
Operators and tariffs vary by motorway. Use the current operator or CAPUFE tariff information for each planned segment rather than carrying one nationwide toll estimate.
Choose cuota or libre deliberately
Cuota roads often provide controlled access, service areas and a more direct intercity line. Libre roads may pass through towns, junctions, livestock areas and frequent speed changes.
Set the route with road numbers and intermediate towns. A navigation app can switch to a free alternative after a missed turn or a traffic update.
Enter the correct booth lane
Slow before the plaza and read the overhead sign. Use a staffed lane when the tag status is uncertain. Never reverse across lane separators.
Keep the booth receipt where the driver can reach it without searching through luggage. It can identify the road section during a billing question or assistance call.
Leave room for road works
Construction, weather and incidents can change a direct drive. Remove the final sightseeing stop when the revised arrival moves beyond daylight.
Use the Ángeles Verdes service correctly
Mexico’s tourism ministry operates Ángeles Verdes roadside assistance on covered tourist corridors. Its 2025 coverage notice lists 233 road sections, 60 assistance points and the free short number 078.
The service can coordinate minor mechanical help and travel information. Save 078 and the rental company’s number before leaving Wi-Fi.
Call from a safe position
Move off the traffic lane when the vehicle can travel safely. Switch on hazards, keep passengers behind a barrier or well away from moving traffic and share the road number, direction and nearest kilometre marker.
Use 911 for an immediate danger, serious crash, fire or medical emergency. The rental company still needs the incident report and vehicle location.
Do not accept an unverified tow
Ask the rental company or official assistance service to identify the operator and destination. Photograph the tow vehicle and obtain paperwork before the car leaves.
Plan fuel and daytime arrivals
Refuel before a long intercity segment and again before the gauge reaches reserve. Confirm whether the car takes gasolina regular, premium or diésel from the fuel-door label and contract.
Watch the pump display and retain the receipt. Leave valuables with a passenger or lock the car when everyone enters the shop.
Treat city entry as a separate task
Mexico City and other large urban areas add congestion, restricted turns, parking controls and local vehicle programs. Ask the branch whether the plate faces a circulation restriction on the exact dates.
Choose a hotel garage with a clear height and entrance. A central car can remain parked while you use public transport.
Stop before fatigue sets in
Heat, straight roads and slow town sections drain attention. Use staffed service areas for breaks and swap only between drivers named in the contract.
Close the rental with evidence
Allow time to refuel at the required distance from the branch. Photograph the final fuel gauge, mileage, panels, wheels, glass and cabin.
Ask the agent to note the return condition and supplied equipment. Keep toll receipts and the closed agreement until tag charges and the deposit settle.
Review delayed toll charges
Electronic transactions can reach the rental account after the car returns. Compare each later charge with the dates, route and fee schedule in the contract.
Raise a discrepancy with the branch in writing and attach the return record. Do not discard booth receipts after the first card release.
Save the next branch before departure
For a one-way rental, confirm the exact return entrance and opening time. An airport label can refer to an off-site depot reached by a service road.
