Arequipa and Colca: A Seven-Day Peru Road Trip

Drive from Arequipa to Chivay and Colca Canyon in seven days, using daylight stages, altitude buffers, official road alerts and secure overnight parking.

Arequipa and the Colca Valley fit into one week when you keep the car parked in the city, use Chivay as the highland base and leave a full day for weather or altitude. The route avoids a rushed extension to Cusco or Lake Titicaca.

This Arequipa Colca road trip starts and ends at Arequipa airport. Read the Peru rental, toll and mountain-road guide before confirming the vehicle.

Use Arequipa and Chivay as the two bases

Book three nights in Arequipa and four in or near Chivay. Confirm off-street parking and ask for a precise entrance location; historic streets may be awkward with luggage.

Leave the car at the lodging during city time. A taxi transfer on the first day can also delay collection until you start the Colca drive.

Make the highland day movable

SUTRAN alerts can show road restrictions caused by weather, crashes or infrastructure. Keep one Chivay day free so the main canyon outing can move.

Check the national-road alert map, regional notices and local instructions. The route saved in a phone does not prove that a branch is open.

Avoid an immediate long ascent

Use the first night in Arequipa before climbing higher. Keep food, water and rest simple, and do not schedule a remote high-altitude walk for the first afternoon in Chivay.

Seven days between Arequipa and Colca

Day 1: arrive in Arequipa

Transfer to the hotel or collect the car in daylight. If you collect, photograph the body, tyres, glass, fuel gauge and odometer before driving to secure parking.

Walk near the accommodation and rest. Save the next fuel stop and SUTRAN alert page offline.

Day 2: Arequipa without the car

Leave the vehicle parked. Use the day for the historic centre and a slower schedule at the city’s elevation.

Confirm the next day’s road report, lodging entrance in Chivay and rental assistance number. Buy water without leaving bags in the car.

Day 3: Arequipa to Chivay

Leave after breakfast and follow the confirmed paved route toward Patahuasi and Chivay. The journey crosses the Salinas y Aguada Blanca protected landscape, whose conservation purpose includes vicuña and high-Andean habitat.

Use signed viewpoints and staffed facilities. Do not follow wildlife off the road or park on vegetation.

Day 4: Chivay and nearby villages

Keep the driving local. Choose one or two recognised valley stops with a confirmed road and parking arrangement.

Return to Chivay before dark. A quiet afternoon protects the next morning from fatigue and gives you time to assess how you feel at altitude.

Day 5: Colca Canyon viewpoint day

Leave early for the recognised viewpoint corridor, including Cruz del Cóndor if the road and visitor operation are open. Use marked parking and stay behind barriers.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Do not crowd the road, cliff edge or another visitor to photograph a condor.

Day 6: buffer day

Repeat the canyon outing if weather blocked Day 5, or select one short valley activity. Keep the vehicle parked for part of the day.

Refuel and check the return road. Remove any optional detour if an alert affects the main corridor.

Day 7: Chivay to Arequipa

Start early enough to reach Arequipa in daylight. Take rest stops only at legal, visible places and allow slow traffic to set the pace.

Return the car with time for fuel and inspection, or stay one more night near the airport for an early flight.

Add an eighth night in Arequipa

An extra city night absorbs a delayed canyon road and removes a fixed flight from the end of a mountain stage.

Manage altitude and driver attention

Stop driving if headache, nausea, dizziness or poor concentration makes vehicle control uncertain. Descend and seek medical help if symptoms become severe or do not improve.

This itinerary is a planning framework, not medical advice. Travellers with existing conditions should ask a clinician about high-altitude travel before the trip.

Keep the driver on the road

A passenger can handle photographs and navigation. The driver should pull into a marked parking area before looking at a map or landscape.

The road trip packing guide helps keep water, warm layers and documents accessible.

Set a last-stop time

Choose the time after which you drive straight to Chivay or Arequipa. Mountain light fades behind ridges before the clock suggests full darkness.

Protect the landscape and parked car

Stay on open roads and marked visitor paths. Carry waste back to the lodging and give wildlife distance.

Remove luggage from view before each stop. Carry passports and electronics, and keep the rental key secure while walking at viewpoints.

Sources and review date

The route was reviewed on August 17, 2026 using the Arequipa regional government’s description of the Arequipa-Colca tourism corridor, PROMPERÚ’s official Peru destination publication and SERNANP information on Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Live-road planning uses the Ministry of Transport report on SUTRAN’s interactive alerts. Recheck the road, viewpoints, protected-area access and rental conditions before travel.
