AlUla works well as a road-trip base rather than a race across western Saudi Arabia. A rental car handles airport, lodging and signed public-road transfers; official tours handle protected heritage sites.

Keep one lodging base for the week
Book six nights in AlUla with confirmed parking. The car carries no luggage during day visits, and a changed tour time does not trigger a hotel problem.
Experience AlUla lists rental operators and local transport options. Confirm airport hours, after-hours return and the exact lodging entrance before travel.
Book heritage visits before the car
Hegra tours have limited daily places. The official site recommends advance booking and states that self-driving is not allowed inside the archaeological site.
Choose the tour date first, then place flexible viewpoints and town walks around it.
Know the meeting point
Official Hegra tours can meet at the South Gate visitor centre or use a coach from Winter Park, depending on the booking. Read the ticket rather than driving to a map pin for a tomb.
Seven days based in AlUla
Day 1: airport collection and check-in
Collect during daylight if possible. Photograph the body, glass, tyres, fuel and safety kit, then drive directly to the lodging.
Buy water and save the rental assistance number. Keep the first evening close to the hotel.
Day 2: Old Town and AlJadidah
Drive to confirmed visitor parking and leave the car there. Explore the linked pedestrian areas on foot and use an official visitor centre for current opening information.
Return before fatigue turns a simple drive into work. Do not add a remote sunset pin without a confirmed public approach.
Day 3: booked Hegra tour
Arrive at the meeting point with the margin stated on the ticket. Park where directed and join the coach or official vehicle.
Hegra’s carved tombs sit across a protected site. The rental remains outside because self-driving within Hegra is prohibited.
Day 4: Dadan or another booked heritage visit
Use the reservation instructions for the meeting point and transport. Experience AlUla notes that visitor-centre status can change; its current page lists Dadan Visitor Centre as temporarily closed.
If the chosen experience is unavailable, move the reserve day forward rather than inventing an access route.
Day 5: one signed landscape outing
Choose Elephant Rock, Harrat Viewpoint or another attraction with an official public approach and current opening details. Make one the main stop and keep the other optional.
Return before dark unless the site is operating as a managed evening visit. Carry water even for a short drive.
Day 6: weather and booking buffer
Use this day for a rescheduled tour, a town visit or a quiet afternoon. Dust, heat or an event can alter opening times.
Refuel today and check the airport return instructions. It removes a last-morning search for the correct fuel grade.
Day 7: airport return
Leave the lodging with time for navigation errors, fuel evidence and an attended inspection. Photograph the car, glass, wheels, gauge and odometer in the return area.
Keep the condition report until the deposit clears.
Do not extend to Medina on impulse
A separate Medina or Red Sea itinerary needs new lodging, fuel and return planning. Seven AlUla days are already full when protected sites are visited properly.
Keep public roads separate from desert tracks
Follow paved, signed approaches and the rental company’s geographic limits. A tyre track across sand is not a road invitation.
Book an authorised operator for off-road access. It supplies the correct vehicle, local route knowledge and recovery plan.
Make heat a stop condition
Shorten the outing if the car warns of overheating, air-conditioning fails or occupants are becoming unwell. Reach a staffed place before trying to diagnose the vehicle.

Share the day’s plan
Tell the lodging where you expect to go and when you will return. Update them when a tour is moved.
Carry a small desert-day kit
Keep drinking water, sun protection, a charged phone and paper booking details in the cabin. Add a warm layer for cool evenings.
Do not leave passports or electronics visible in the car. A one-base plan makes it easy to leave unnecessary luggage in the room.
