A Singapore rental car is useful for an outlying island day, several industrial stops or luggage that makes public transport awkward. For Marina Bay, Orchard and the CBD, parking and ERP can make a car slower than the MRT. Singapore drives on the left, and the rental vehicle may use an older IU or the newer ERP 2.0 On-Board Unit, so ask the desk before leaving.

Match the licence to the driver
The Singapore Police Force guidance says a foreigner residing for less than 12 months generally needs a valid foreign licence and an IDP from the country of origin, or an official English translation where an IDP is unavailable. ASEAN licence holders do not need an IDP under that guidance. Carry the physical licence and the supporting document together.
Check residency and rental age
Longer-term residents, new citizens and certain pass holders have conversion duties. Rental companies can set a higher age or licence-holding threshold than the legal minimum. Ask about an additional driver and the surcharge before paying.
Photograph the IU or OBU
Record the unit, card, warning lights, fuel level, mileage, tyres and bodywork at pickup. Ask which account pays ERP, private-car-park charges and missed transactions.
Learn the ERP 2.0 transition
The LTA ERP 2.0 page describes a GNSS-based OBU and says foreign-registered vehicles without an OBU will face a flat daily ERP fee from January 1, 2027. A visitor in a Singapore-registered rental car should still ask whether the vehicle has an IU, an OBU or a backend rental arrangement.
Ask three questions at the desk
Which device is fitted? Which card or account pays? What administration fee is added? Keep the final statement with the contract. Do not assume a gantry, a rental invoice and a private car park use the same payment channel.
Set a cashless backup
Keep a tested card or stored-value option for a garage that does not accept the app or the rental backend. If a machine rejects the payment, move to a safe place and ask staff rather than leaving the car in a lane.
Read parking signs before the lot
The LTA parking page lists Parking.sg, displayed coupons and stored-value cards as common payment routes. HDB, URA, mall and private garages can set different rates and operating hours. Read the entrance board and keep the registration number ready.

Keep the curb clear
Do not stop in a bus lane, at a fire hydrant, beside a junction or in a loading space outside its permitted time. Photograph the bay, floor and exit. A “free” mall period is a condition of that operator, not a city-wide rule.
Leave the CBD for rail
If the itinerary is Marina Bay, Orchard and Chinatown, park once at an outer interchange or return the car. ERP and garage searches are part of the time cost.
Choose a useful driving day
A car helps when the route combines Mandai, Changi, industrial estates, the east coast or several northern stops. Use OneMotoring traffic information before departure and set the first parking entrance while stationary.
Keep the checkpoint optional
Cross-border travel to Malaysia requires written rental permission, insurance and the right vehicle documents. A Singapore-registered car also has the ICA three-quarter-tank rule when leaving by land checkpoint. Confirm the registration country before applying a rule to the rental.
Do not drive onto Pulau Ubin
Leave the rental car at Changi Village and use the boat. The island visit is a reason to park early, not to search for a vehicle route.
Plan around rain and handover
The Meteorological Service publishes heavy-rain warnings and PUB explains flood response. Slow down, increase the gap and turn around when water hides the lane edge. Keep a dry route alternative and charge the phone before crossing the island.
Close the contract cleanly
Return during staffed hours, photograph the fuel, mileage, bodywork and ERP device, and ask when final charges will be issued. Call 995 for emergency ambulance or fire and 999 for police. For a non-dangerous breakdown, use the rental roadside number and stay behind a barrier only when safe.
Save the day card
Write the rental branch, hotel address, registration plate, emergency numbers, device type and parking payment method on paper. It is faster than rebuilding the plan beside a wet road.
