South African Tourism defines the Garden Route around the N2 between Mossel Bay and Storms River, with forest, lakes and coastal towns on either side. Seven days suit the core route without adding a rushed return to Cape Town.

Set the endpoints before booking
George Airport works for the western end, while Gqeberha serves the east. Compare one-way rental fees with the cost and time of returning to the same branch.
If you start in Cape Town, add a separate positioning day to Mossel Bay. The drive does not belong beside a full sightseeing schedule.
Use three overnight bases
Stay around Mossel Bay or Wilderness, then Knysna, then Storms River or Plettenberg Bay. Two-night bases reduce packing and let weather move a forest or beach visit.
Book the final night away from the departure flight. Road incidents and rental inspection need a margin.
Confirm park accommodation
SANParks camps and activities follow separate booking rules. Check gate times, vehicle access and conservation fees before relying on an in-park stay.
Seven-day route along the N2
Day 1: George to Mossel Bay
Collect the car in daylight, inspect the tyres and set left-side mirrors. Drive the short stage to Mossel Bay and park at the accommodation.
Use the afternoon for a harbor walk or museum. Keep the first day free of gravel detours.
Day 2: Mossel Bay to Wilderness
Follow the N2 toward George and Wilderness. Choose one beach or viewpoint, then reach the next base before the afternoon traffic.
Confirm whether the lodging approach is paved and whether secure parking sits behind a gate.
Day 3: Wilderness lakes and forest
Leave the car at a legal trailhead or SANParks access point. Check weather and trail status before starting.
Use the second night in the same area. A non-transfer day provides space for rain or a slower walk.
Day 4: Wilderness to Knysna
Drive through Sedgefield and choose one stop before Knysna. Saturday markets and holiday traffic can slow the N2, so avoid a fixed lunch deadline.
Enter a confirmed Knysna garage or accommodation parking area, then explore the waterfront without the car.
Day 5: Knysna and Plettenberg Bay
Use the day for the Knysna Heads, lagoon or one Plettenberg Bay visit. Do not combine every coastal viewpoint.
Move luggage only at the accommodation. Keep passports and electronics with you at public car parks.
Day 6: Knysna to Storms River
Continue east with a stop around Nature’s Valley or a booked park activity. Check the SANParks gate time and reach the overnight base before dark.
Fuel before entering a longer park or forest section. Keep water and the roadside number in the car.
Day 7: Storms River to Gqeberha
Use the morning for one short walk if the return schedule allows, then follow the N2 east. Refuel near the rental branch and retain the receipt.
Photograph the vehicle, plate and fuel gauge. Allow time for the condition inspection.
Add Oudtshoorn with two nights
The inland Klein Karoo creates a separate loop over mountain passes. Add two days around Oudtshoorn rather than attaching it to a coast transfer.
Plan each stop around opening hours
National-park gates, activity desks and trail access can close before sunset. Save the official page and booking reference offline.
Arrive with enough time to complete the visit and leave under the site’s rules.
Keep the car on approved roads
An ordinary rental does not gain off-road permission because a map shows a shortcut. Follow the contract and park instructions.

Wind, fire risk and heavy rain can close trails or roads. Follow SANParks and local authority instructions.
Drive the N2 with a margin
The N2 carries local traffic, trucks and holiday travel. Slow for pedestrians and junctions, then use service areas for breaks.
Do not schedule an unfamiliar arrival after dark. Call the lodging if a delay moves beyond the planned cutoff.
Keep fuel above reserve
Refill in Mossel Bay, George, Knysna or another confirmed town before a park day. Station hours and payment systems can change.
Ignore unsafe shortcuts
Use the recommended main approach from the accommodation or park. A phone’s fastest route may enter an unsuitable road.
