Taiwan Sun Moon Lake and Alishan Seven-Day Route

Drive from Taichung to Sun Moon Lake and Alishan in seven days, using measured mountain stages, two-night bases, legal parking and a weather-aware return plan.

Sun Moon Lake and Alishan sit close enough on a map to tempt a fast loop. The road says otherwise: lake traffic, afternoon fog and the long climb on Highway 18 reward two-night bases and an early start.

This Taiwan Sun Moon Lake road trip begins in Taichung, spends two nights at the lake and two in the Alishan area, then returns through Chiayi. Read the Taiwan rental and toll guide before collecting the car.

Use three bases and one return buffer

Book the first night in Taichung, two at Sun Moon Lake, two near Alishan or Shizhuo and the final night in Chiayi or Taichung. The last choice depends on the rental return point and flight time.

Off-street parking matters at every base. Ask for an arrival route that keeps the car away from pedestrian lanes, market streets and hotel entrances too tight for luggage unloading.

Keep the high section movable

Do not tie Alishan to a non-refundable sunrise activity on the first mountain morning. Fog or road controls may shift the climb, and the official scenic-area guidance recommends allowing more than a rushed day.

Check the 168 provincial-highway service each morning. Use Highway 18 for Alishan unless the official authority directs traffic elsewhere.

Do not invent a mountain shortcut

The Alishan authority lists narrow alternatives for disruptions but warns that some are one-way, small-car roads with falling-rock risk. They are not automatic tourist detours.

Seven days from Taichung to Alishan

Day 1: collect in Taichung

Collect after the city rush if the branch permits it. Photograph the car, confirm ETC handling and drive only to the booked parking.

Use the rest of the day for supplies and an early meal. A city attraction is not worth starting the route tired.

Day 2: Taichung to Sun Moon Lake

Leave after breakfast and follow the signed main route. The Tourism Administration places Xiangshan Visitor Center on the lake’s western side and lists visitor services and parking there.

Settle into one lake base for two nights. Once parked, use boats, walking paths or local buses rather than moving the car between every stop.

Day 3: a car-light lake day

Choose one side of the lake rather than trying to complete every viewpoint. The official Sun Moon Lake tourism page covers Xiangshan, Shuishe, Ita Thao and nearby cultural sites.

Keep the vehicle in its overnight space if the local transport suits the plan. If you drive, use marked parking and allow for cyclists on the lakeside roads.

Day 4: Sun Moon Lake to Shizhuo

Check the numbered roads and weather before departure. Use a confirmed lowland connection toward Chiayi, then approach Shizhuo on Highway 18.

Arrive before the afternoon fog described by the Alishan National Scenic Area. Shizhuo can be a practical base for tea-country walks without forcing a pre-dawn drive from the plains.

Day 5: Alishan Forest Recreation Area

Drive the main Highway 18 approach after checking traffic. The scenic-area authority identifies Highway 18 as the principal tourism road and warns against illegal overtaking.

Park in the designated visitor area and use the local walking paths or shuttle arrangements. Do not drive beyond a control post without permission.

Day 6: descend to Chiayi

Leave enough daylight for a slow descent. Use a lower gear, keep distance behind buses and stop only at signed rest areas.

Spend the final night in Chiayi if the rental permits a local return or if the next day’s drive to Taichung remains comfortably within the return window.

Day 7: return without a final detour

Refuel according to the contract and allow time for freeway traffic, toll records and an attended inspection. If returning in Taichung, leave Chiayi early.

Do not add another mountain viewpoint. The return day protects the flight and deposit, which makes it a real part of the itinerary.

Add a separate airport night when needed

An early international flight and a mountain-road return do not belong on the same morning. Add a night near the departure airport or return the car the previous day.

Make each mountain decision reversible

Save the overnight addresses, Highway 18 and the lowland return route offline. Keep attraction pins in a separate list so a closed viewpoint cannot rewrite the whole trip.

If the official road service shows a closure, use the day in Chiayi or at the current base. A paid room is cheaper than entering an unstable road.

Drive the descent before fatigue

Select a lower gear before speed builds. Brake in separate applications and pull into a legal rest area if concentration drops.

The road trip packing guide covers water, charging and a compact delay kit.

Give cyclists a full passing margin

Lake roads and mountain approaches can carry cyclists. Wait for clear sight distance and a legal passing section rather than squeezing through a bend.

Sources and review date

The route was reviewed on August 17, 2026 against the Tourism Administration’s Sun Moon Lake regional guide and Xiangshan Visitor Center information. The Alishan stage follows the scenic-area authority’s self-drive directions and travel tips. Live road decisions use the Highway Bureau’s 168 service. Recheck parking, lodging access, fog, storm notices and Highway 18 before travel.
