German city entry requires two separate checks: whether an environmental zone still operates and whether the vehicle meets any additional local restriction. Parking starts another set of signs, hours and payment rules. A green sticker does not create a parking right.

Check the current city, not an old map
Germany’s Federal Environment Agency explains that municipalities have removed some environmental zones as air quality and local plans changed. Other zones remain. Use its current list and then open the named city’s official page.
Do not assume that a map saved last year still applies. Zone boundaries, diesel restrictions and exceptions can change independently.
Ask the rental company about the vehicle
Confirm whether the car displays the required environmental sticker and whether any city-specific diesel rule affects it. Record the fuel type, Euro emissions class and registration. A booking category does not identify the exact vehicle.
If the planned cities matter to the trip, name them at the desk. Ask the company to provide another vehicle when the assigned car cannot legally enter a required zone.
Inspect the windscreen
The registration written on the sticker must match the vehicle. Photograph both. Do not move a sticker from another car or rely on an invoice that cannot be displayed as required.
Understand what the green sticker proves
The Federal Environment Agency describes the sticker system under Germany’s emissions-labelling rules. Existing environmental zones generally require the permitted sticker class, but a city can add another restriction for certain diesel vehicles.

Treat Berlin and Munich separately
A vehicle that may enter Berlin does not receive automatic permission for every part of Munich. Read each city’s boundary map, vehicle rules and exceptions. When the answer remains unclear, park outside the zone and continue by public transport.
Electric vehicles also need a document check. Local rules for German and foreign electric-vehicle markings can differ from a visitor’s assumption that zero tailpipe emissions remove every sticker requirement.
Order a foreign-vehicle sticker early
Official providers may need a copy of the registration document and time for delivery. Use a municipal or recognised inspection-channel page. Check the plate on the sticker when it arrives.
Read parking signs as a group
Start with the main parking or stopping sign, then read every supplementary panel. Check arrows, operating days, times, resident permits, maximum stay and payment method. The restriction may begin or end away from the meter.
Look for temporary signs before leaving the car. Road work, markets and removals can suspend normal parking even when the permanent sign appears to allow it.
Keep the ticket visible
Berlin’s visitor guidance explains that managed street-parking zones may require a ticket from the machine or an approved mobile payment. Follow the instruction on the specific machine and display the paper ticket when required.
Enter the correct plate in an app or machine. Save the zone, expiry and receipt. A payment confirmation does not override the posted maximum stay or resident restriction.
Photograph the bay
Take one image showing the car within the markings and another showing the complete sign group. Include the meter or app receipt. These records make a later question easier to reconstruct.
Use garages and Park and Ride deliberately
An old town often works better on foot. Choose a signed garage outside the historic core and walk from there. Berlin also directs visitors to Park and Ride locations near regional and urban rail services.
Check vehicle height, opening hours, overnight access and payment cards before joining a garage queue. Roof boxes and rental vans may exceed the limit.
Plan the pedestrian exit
Photograph the level, bay and pedestrian-door hours. A garage can use a different entrance after shops close. Keep the ticket away from phones or magnets when its instructions warn about damage.
For the Romantic Road, park once in Würzburg, Rothenburg or Füssen rather than driving between small central car parks. The route article provides slower town stages for this approach.
Leave the charging bay after charging
An EV bay may require an active charge, a parking payment or both. Read the sign and move the car when the session or allowed stay ends. A cable alone does not prove compliance.
Build the final kilometre before departure
Save the zone boundary, garage entrance and last legal junction. Navigation may route across a restricted street to save time. Follow the signs and continue to the planned alternative when the turn is not permitted.
Keep the hotel address and parking instruction in German. Ask whether the hotel lies inside an environmental zone and whether its garage requires advance registration.
Run the city-entry check
Confirm the vehicle, sticker, city rule, parking location and backup. Check the official city page again after a long gap between booking and travel.

Keep records through the rental return
Retain sticker documents, parking receipts and return photographs until the final invoice settles. If the rental company forwards a notice, compare the plate, place, time and cited rule with your records and use the official response process.
