Transylvania works better as three bases than as a string of one-night stops. Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu each deserve time on foot, while the roads between them pass villages, hills and occasional works that make arrival times variable.
This Romania Transylvania road trip uses two nights in Brașov and two in Sibiu, with Sighișoara between them. It does not depend on the Transfăgărășan being open. Read the Romania driving overview and the rovinieta and mountain-road guide before collection.
Choose a loop that survives closures
Begin in Bucharest, travel to Brașov, continue through Sighișoara to Sibiu, then return by an open main-road corridor. The route can run in either direction when weather or accommodation makes that better.
The DN7C Transfăgărășan is an optional summer day only after an official status check. The high section closes seasonally and can close in poor conditions, so no booked flight or hotel should require it.
Use three sleeping areas
Spend nights one and two in Brașov, night three in or near Sighișoara, and nights four and five in Sibiu. Night six belongs near the return corridor or Bucharest airport.
Two-night stays reduce luggage exposure and give one full day when the driver can walk or use local transport.
Book the vehicle entrance
Historic-centre accommodation may have a different parking address from its reception. Request the entrance, access code, height and charge in writing.
Seven days through the Saxon towns
Day 1: Bucharest to Brașov
Collect after the Bucharest stay, inspect the car and verify its rovinieta. Drive to the booked Brașov parking without adding a castle stop to the first unfamiliar transfer.
Settle in before dark and keep the car parked. The old centre is compact enough for an evening walk.
Day 2: Brașov without moving hotels
Choose Brașov itself or one nearby outing based on traffic and weather. One castle, fortified site or mountain walk is enough for a full day.
Return to the same car park before evening. Read the bay rules again if the vehicle was moved during the day.
Day 3: Brașov to Sighișoara
Leave after breakfast and allow time for village traffic and roadworks. Reach Sighișoara early enough to park outside the citadel and walk uphill.
UNESCO describes the historic centre as a well-preserved small fortified medieval town shaped by Transylvanian Saxon culture. Treat the protected streets as a walking destination, not a drive-through.
Day 4: Sighișoara to Sibiu
Choose one fortified church or village stop whose hours fit the corridor. A short detour can consume half a day if the entrance is closed or parking is unclear.
Continue to Sibiu and use the accommodation’s stated parking route. Stay two nights.
Day 5: Sibiu on foot
Leave the car in place for the squares, passages and museums. Use the day as a weather buffer if the previous transfer was delayed.
Check the next day’s official road information in the evening. Mountain conditions can change after a clear afternoon.
Day 6: Open-road choice
If the high DN7C is officially open, weather is stable and the driver is rested, choose a sensible out-and-back or onward segment with daylight margins. Otherwise use an open lower route or spend more time around Sibiu.
Do not chase the road for photographs in fog, ice or heavy traffic. A closed gate ends the plan.
Day 7: Return to Bucharest
Use the main open corridor chosen from current police information. Refuel or charge near the branch, photograph the car and request a closed agreement.
For an early flight, return on Day 6 and sleep near the airport. The final morning should not rely on an uncertain mountain crossing.
Add a castle by dropping a town stop
Bran or another popular site can fit near Brașov, but only with a parking and ticket plan. Replace another attraction instead of extending the driving day.
Drive villages without rushing the timetable
Settlements, junctions, farm traffic and pedestrians can appear along national roads. Follow the displayed limit and leave enough space for an oncoming vehicle before passing.
A navigation shortcut may use a rough or narrow local road. Stay on the signed main route when the saving is small or weather has reduced visibility.
Stop at proper facilities
Do not use a verge, gateway or blind bend as a viewpoint. Continue to a marked lot, fuel station or village parking area.

Fill before the mountain option
Refuel while stations and payment options are predictable. Carry water and a warm layer even on a summer route.
Keep official checks close to departure
Review Romanian Police traffic information on every transfer morning. Save the date and time of any notice that changes the route.
Verify rovinieta validity after a rental extension or vehicle swap. The electronic record follows the plate, not the driver’s booking reference.
Protect the final return margin
Allow time for Bucharest traffic, fuel and branch inspection. Keep toll, parking and return records until the deposit and card statement settle.
Download the route before leaving Wi-Fi
Store lodging entrances, parking coordinates and one lower-road alternative. Solve a missed turn from a legal stopping place rather than while moving.
