Swiss motorways use one annual charge rather than a short visitor pass. A rental car may already carry a sticker or have an electronic vignette linked to its number plate. You need to confirm which one applies before the first blue motorway entrance.

Confirm the vignette before departure
Switzerland requires a vignette for cars, motorcycles, trailers and campers up to 3.5 tonnes on motorways and expressways covered by the scheme. The 2026 vignette costs CHF 40 and runs from December 1, 2025 through January 31, 2027. Switzerland does not sell daily, weekly or monthly versions.
Ask the rental desk to show whether the car has a valid windscreen sticker or e-vignette. Photograph the sticker and number plate beside the rental agreement. A previous renter’s receipt does not prove that the assigned car remains covered.
Check the plate on an e-vignette
The federal Via portal links an e-vignette to the registration. Enter the country and plate in the official checker when the rental company asks you to verify coverage. Compare letters, spacing and numbers with the physical plate.
If the car changes after a breakdown, repeat the check. The first vehicle’s electronic record does not follow you to a replacement plate.
Avoid unofficial sales pages
Use the Swiss government portal or a named border sales point. Search advertisements may add service fees or imitate the official checkout. Keep the purchase confirmation with the trip records.
Know where the charge applies
The vignette covers the national motorway and expressway network shown by the federal authorities. It does not pay every separate transport cost. Some car trains, private mountain roads, tunnels or parking facilities set their own fares.
Plan the route with road numbers visible. A navigation app may choose a motorway for a short bypass even when you intended to stay on ordinary roads.
Treat trailers as separate vehicles
A trailer or caravan up to 3.5 tonnes needs its own vignette. Ask the rental company whether both units carry valid coverage. Photograph each sticker or electronic confirmation.
Heavier motorhomes fall under a different road-charge system. Confirm the technically permissible maximum mass from the registration rather than estimating from the vehicle’s size.
Leave the motorway lawfully
Do not stop on the shoulder to buy a vignette after passing the entry sign. Continue to a safe exit or service area and follow police or operator instructions if you entered in error.
Prepare for Alpine roads and tunnels
A valid vignette says nothing about an Alpine pass being open. Snow, rockfall, maintenance and traffic incidents can close a high road while the motorway tunnel remains available. Check ASTRA traffic information and the cantonal or TCS pass report on the morning of travel.
The Gotthard corridor can develop long queues during holiday periods. Keep fuel above a comfortable reserve and set a cutoff time for optional pass detours.
Use the signed route at closures
Electronic signs and barriers take priority over a saved map. Follow the marked diversion and avoid village shortcuts that authorities restrict during motorway congestion.
Mountain weather can change between valleys. Carry warm layers and water even on a summer itinerary, then arrive before darkness on unfamiliar pass roads.
Stop only in marked areas
Viewpoint lay-bys fill early. Continue to the next signed space when the vehicle cannot fit fully outside the lane. A bend, tunnel portal or avalanche gallery entrance is not a photo stop.
Park with the local sign in view
Swiss cities use blue zones, paid spaces and permit areas. A blue-zone space may require a parking disc set to the arrival time under the posted rules. Rental cars often include a disc, but check the glovebox before leaving the branch.
Meters and apps can require the plate. Save the receipt and photograph the nearest sign. Hotel parking instructions should state whether the space is private, municipal or inside a restricted access area.
Keep pedestrian crossings clear
Drivers must approach zebra crossings ready to yield. Do not stop across the markings while searching for a garage entrance. Cyclists and trams add separate movements in larger cities.

Recheck overnight restrictions
A legal evening space may change status for street cleaning, a market or resident use the next morning. Read the full panel and confirm the departure time before walking away.
Document cross-border rental plans
Switzerland is outside the EU customs union. EU residents who rent a Swiss-registered vehicle can face customs restrictions when taking it into an EU country. Tell the rental company every country on the itinerary before booking and obtain written permission, insurance and roadside coverage.
Check the next country’s road charge before the border. Austria, France, Italy and Germany use different motorway or city-access systems.
Close the trip with evidence
Photograph the car, plate, fuel gauge and parking bay at return. Keep vignette receipts, garage tickets and any road-charge confirmations until the final card statement settles.
Check again on a future visit
Vignette validity, assigned plates and pass conditions change. Repeat the vehicle and route checks instead of relying on a receipt from an earlier journey.
