Finland maintains its main roads through winter, but a ploughed road is not a summer road. Snow pack, polished junctions, darkness and drifting snow change the time and space a driver needs. The rental car must match those conditions before it leaves the branch.

Inspect the winter equipment at collection
Passenger cars must use winter tyres from November through March when weather or road conditions require them. Non-studded winter tyres must carry the prescribed three-peak mountain snowflake marking. Traficom states a minimum main-groove depth of 3 millimetres for winter tyres, while more depth is sensible in difficult conditions.
Ask the rental company to identify the tyre type on the assigned car. Photograph the markings, tread and visible condition on all four wheels.
Check what the contract actually includes
Confirm the scraper, snow brush, washer fluid, warning triangle and reflective vest. If the route goes north, ask about an engine heater cable and how the accommodation’s heater post works.
Do not assume that a larger car solves winter grip. Tyres, speed and driver inputs matter more than body style on an ordinary maintained road.
Change the plan before the car
If the vehicle or forecast is unsuitable, revise the route at the branch. A booking confirmation does not obligate you to drive into conditions beyond your experience.
Let the road set the speed
The posted limit is a maximum, not a promise that the surface supports it. Brake, steer and accelerate smoothly. Increase following distance before junctions, hills and shaded bends where polished ice can persist.
Clear snow and ice from every window, mirror, light and the roof. Loose snow can slide onto the windscreen or strike another vehicle.
Use live cameras and warnings
Fintraffic’s Traffic Situation service combines road conditions, weather, incidents and camera views. Check the next stage before departure and after a meal stop. A distant camera is useful context, but it does not prove that every local road is equal.
Save the accommodation number and route offline. Battery performance and reception can both be weaker in cold, remote areas.
Turn around without drama
Blowing snow, poor contrast or repeated loss of grip are reasons to stop at a safe place or return. Arriving late is preferable to continuing because the room is prepaid.
Plan darkness, fuel and electric range
Keep fuel above a comfortable reserve and stop before fatigue builds. In an electric car, cold, cabin heat, speed and snow can reduce practical range. Plan chargers with alternatives rather than relying on the summer estimate shown at collection.
Finish unfamiliar rural stages in daylight when possible. If you must arrive after dark, obtain precise parking and entrance instructions from the lodging.
Use lights correctly
Headlights must be used whenever driving. Automatic daytime lights may leave the rear dark in poor visibility, so learn the car’s controls before departure.
Keep washer fluid topped up. Road spray can obscure the windscreen quickly on treated sections.
Pack for a wait outside the car
Carry warm outer layers, gloves, water, a charged power bank and any essential medication where passengers can reach them. Luggage under the boot floor is not useful during a roadside wait.
Slow down for animals and people
Elk, reindeer and deer can enter the road with little warning. Risk increases around forest edges and low light. Reduce speed where signs or local conditions indicate animals.
If a collision occurs, stop safely, warn traffic and call 112. Visit Finland advises reporting animal collisions to the police or emergency services. Do not approach an injured animal.
Avoid the tempting snowbank stop
A ploughed shoulder may hide a ditch. Use signed lay-bys, service areas or a confirmed car park for photographs and navigation changes.
At accommodation, ask which spaces are safe and whether snow-clearing schedules require the car to move.
Park without freezing the trip
Do not set the parking brake if the rental company advises a different cold-weather procedure for that vehicle. Follow the handbook and branch instructions rather than general internet advice.
Close each day with a short reset
Check the forecast, road map and next charger or fuel stop before bed. Brush snow away before it compacts around the vehicle, and keep the exhaust area clear if the engine runs.

Record the return condition
Photograph the car after clearing enough snow to show the panels and wheels. Include the plate, dashboard, fuel or charge level and return bay.
Keep delayed charges traceable
Retain parking receipts and the rental agreement until the final card statement settles. Record the time and place of any roadside assistance.
