The Danube Bend sits close to Budapest, but treating it as a rapid sequence of photo stops misses the river towns and creates unnecessary parking searches. Five days allow two-night stays and a full day when the car barely moves.

Start when the Budapest stay ends
Budapest has extensive public transport and limited reasons to keep a rental parked. Collect from an outer branch or the airport on departure morning, then head to Szentendre with the damage and fuel record complete.
Use two nights around Visegrád or Nagymaros and two near Esztergom. The remaining night can sit in Szentendre or near the return branch, depending on flight time.
Pick a riverbank before navigation does
Road and rail run along both sides of the river, while ferries connect selected towns. This itinerary stays on Hungarian roads and does not require a crossing into Slovakia.
If a ferry would shorten a day, confirm its vehicle service, operating hours, payment and weather status that morning. Keep a same-bank route ready.
Make daylight the daily limit
Views, castle paths and riverside walks take longer than their map pins suggest. Set the overnight arrival before adding an extra village.
Five unhurried days along the bend
Day 1: Budapest to Szentendre
Collect after breakfast and drive to a signed car park outside Szentendre’s central lanes. Leave the car and explore the old town on foot.
Stay locally or continue to the first two-night base only if check-in and daylight allow. Avoid making a central restaurant address the navigation target.
Day 2: Szentendre to Visegrád
Follow the river north and use the designated visitor parking for the Visegrád sights. The national tourism site places Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom together as the core bend sequence.
Choose the citadel area or a lower riverside stop according to weather and mobility. Stay nearby instead of driving onward after the final visit.
Day 3: A no-transfer river day
Use the same base for a walk, museum, short drive or ferry outing. Visegrád’s official tourism guide highlights viewpoints and nearby places, but you do not need to connect all of them in one loop.
Check river and ferry conditions before leaving. When rain limits the view, move an indoor visit forward and keep the longer walk for Day 4.
Day 4: Visegrád to Esztergom
Continue along the Hungarian bank and enter a booked Esztergom car park. Walk to the basilica area and riverfront rather than moving the car between nearby sights.
The Mária Valéria Bridge is a useful landmark and pedestrian outing. Driving across creates an international trip, so confirm rental permission and insurance before considering it.
Day 5: Esztergom to the return
Leave time for a final riverside walk, then return toward Budapest. Use the branch entrance saved at collection, refuel or charge nearby and request a closed contract.
If a morning flight follows, spend the last night near the airport. Do not rely on a dawn drive from the bend after a late dinner.
Add Gödöllő only with a sixth day
Gödöllő lies east of Budapest rather than on the bend. Add it as a separate final day instead of crossing the capital twice during the river itinerary.
Park before the old streets begin
Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom all reward walking. Save a public facility for each town and read the local payment sign beside the bay.
Enter the rental plate exactly in meters or apps. Photograph the sign, bay and confirmation so a later notice can be matched to the correct stay.
Protect space for buses and bicycles
River roads can narrow near villages, stops and parked cars. Hold back rather than passing a cyclist into an unseen bend or squeezing beside a bus.

Avoid river-edge photo stops
A scenic shoulder may be a cycle lane, bus area or flood-access route. Continue to a marked car park and walk back.
Keep the route useful in poor weather
Separate the plan into exposed viewpoints, town walks and indoor visits. When rain or wind reduces the first group, shift the day without adding more kilometres.
Download lodging and parking addresses. River topography can weaken mobile coverage, and a safe car park is the right place to solve a missed turn.
Carry layers outside the suitcase
Hilltops and riverbanks can feel cooler than sheltered streets. Keep rain protection, water and walking shoes accessible without unloading every bag.
