Hungary’s motorway charge is tied to a registration number, country code, vehicle category and validity period. There is no sticker to inspect on the windscreen. A single wrong character can therefore matter more than the purchase screen looking complete.
This Hungary e vignette guide explains D1 and D2 rental categories, purchase records, Budapest parking and return paperwork. Begin with the driving in Hungary overview for licence and national rules. The five-day Danube Bend route starts after the Budapest stay.

Identify the category from the documents
The national toll operator defines D1 for an M1 or M1G passenger vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats including the driver, plus its trailer. D2 covers vehicles such as N1 or N1G and passenger vehicles with eight or more seats. A trailer towed by a D2 vehicle needs category U.
A van-shaped car, people carrier or camper should not be classified from appearance. Ask the rental company to show the vehicle class, seating and registration data used for the toll category.
Ask whether a valid vignette already exists
Some Hungarian rental cars may already hold a national or regional entitlement. Use the official sticker query with the plate and country code, and ask the company for written confirmation.
Do not buy a second product until you know the coverage and expiry. A county vignette can be valid for one region without covering the full route.
Repeat the check after a vehicle swap
A replacement has a different plate and may fall into another category. Treat the swap as a new collection: inspect the car, verify entitlement and update every parking app.
Enter four fields without guessing
At purchase, confirm the plate without added spaces, the registration country, category and start date. Choose among the official daily, 10-day, monthly or annual products according to the trip.
The operator describes a 60-minute period for drivers who enter a charged road by mistake without a valid entitlement. That window is a recovery rule, not a reason to postpone a planned purchase. Buy before using the motorway.
Keep the receipt for the stated period
The official rate page advises retaining the confirmation or counterfoil for three years after expiry. Save a durable PDF and a screenshot that shows every entered field.
If buying at a counter, read the printed data before signing or leaving. Ask for a correction while the transaction is still open.
Avoid search-ad resellers
Start from the national toll operator. A private seller may add fees or present a regional product without making the route limitation clear.

Leave Budapest before collecting
Trams, one-way streets, parking zones and heavy pedestrian movement make a central car unnecessary for a city stay. Collect at the airport or an outer branch when the road trip starts.
If a car is needed overnight, reserve a garage and request its vehicle entrance. The hotel’s postal address may point to a pedestrian frontage or controlled street.
Match payment to the zone and plate
Read the closest parking sign and note the zone, charge hours and maximum stay. Enter the plate exactly as shown on the car, including the correct country setting in an app.
Keep the session confirmation and photograph the bay. Temporary event restrictions or works can replace the regular rule.
Save the pedestrian return door
Garage ramps and pedestrian entrances may close on different schedules. Photograph the ticket, level and after-hours instructions before walking away.
Follow the displayed road limit
Hungarian Police describes the standard limits as 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h outside them, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. A posted lower limit, temporary sign or electronic display takes priority.
Headlights must be used outside built-up areas. Check that automatic daytime lights also illuminate what the conditions require, especially at dusk or in rain.
Keep motorway stops predictable
Plan fuel or charging before the reserve warning. At a service area, lock the car and keep the key with the driver while passengers move around.
For an electric rental, confirm the charging network, connector and payment method before the first transfer. Hotel charging should be reserved in writing when it shapes the itinerary.
Carry the rental documents
Keep the contract, registration information, insurance contact and vignette confirmation available offline. Store copies securely rather than leaving the only version in an unlocked glovebox.

Return with a complete timeline
Photograph the fuel or charge level, mileage, panels, wheels and return position. Ask for a closed agreement, then keep the vignette and parking records until the final card statement settles.
If a notice arrives, check its plate, road, time and category against the purchase confirmation. Use the contact details on the official toll site rather than replying to an unrelated payment link.
Create one motorway departure check
Before joining a charged road, verify the plate, category, country and validity on the official query page. The same routine takes less time than reconstructing a purchase later.
Use the parking abroad guide for a reusable sign and receipt checklist.
Correct errors from a safe stop
Do not make a sudden turn or reverse when the motorway entrance appears earlier than expected. Join safely, stop at the next suitable place and follow the operator’s current correction procedure.
Sources and review date
Categories, validity products, purchase fields and record retention were reviewed on August 17, 2026 using the national toll operator’s e-vignette rate and category page. Entitlement checks use its official sticker query, and 2026 changes were checked with the operator’s current notice. Standard speed and lighting guidance was checked with Hungarian Police. Recheck the assigned car and route before purchase.
