Turkey collects motorway and bridge charges through HGS, an electronic account linked to the plate and vehicle class. Most rental companies manage the tag, but the contract should explain how they pass each toll and administration fee to the driver.

Ask how the rental company handles HGS
KGM, Turkey’s General Directorate of Highways, uses HGS on its charged motorways and bridges. The tag account needs enough balance, and charges depend on the route and class.
At collection, ask whether the assigned plate has an active account, whether the tag is visible, and how the company bills tolls after return. Request the administration-fee schedule in writing.
Record the assigned plate and class
Photograph the registration document and plate. A normal passenger car often falls into Class 1, but axle spacing and vehicle type determine the official class.
Do not copy the class from the booking category when the company supplies a van or larger replacement. Ask the desk to identify it on the contract.
Recheck a replacement vehicle
A swap introduces another plate and HGS account. Repeat the toll questions and photograph the new device before leaving the branch.
Use the official violation query
KGM provides an English pass-violation query and payment page. Its current guidance allows a toll to be resolved during the stated penalty-free period after an unpaid passage, subject to the rules shown for that operator and road.
Rental drivers should contact the company before paying against its plate. The company may already have settled the passage or may require a particular process.
Note the road, bridge and time
Keep a trip log for charged motorways and Bosphorus crossings. If a later invoice lacks detail, the route and timestamp help match it to the correct journey.
Use KGM’s current tariff documents rather than copying an old price into the travel budget. Rates can change during the rental season.
Avoid unrelated payment links
Start from kgm.gov.tr or the rental company’s stated portal. A text message that demands urgent payment without a matching plate and passage needs verification.
Keep a rental car out of central Istanbul
Metro, tram and ferry services cover the main visitor areas. Collect after the city stay or reserve a garage with a confirmed vehicle entrance.
Historic streets can carry delivery controls, one-way sections and dense pedestrian traffic. Set a named public facility as the destination instead of a landmark or hotel reception.
Read local parking from the sign
Payment methods, hours and permit restrictions vary by location. Photograph the nearest sign, bay markings and receipt before leaving the car.
Ask the hotel whether it validates a private garage. A parking symbol on a booking page may refer to paid off-site space.
Plan the bridge before the junction
Choose the European or Asian side of the overnight base before entering the city. A missed exit can add a bridge crossing and another toll.
Enter and leave the motorway safely
Follow the lane arrows and HGS signs without stopping below a gantry. Do not reverse after a wrong entrance; continue to the next legal exit or safe service area.
Traffic can slow sharply near toll points, construction and city approaches. Keep enough distance to respond without crossing lane markings late.
Fuel before a long transfer
Motorway service areas make fuel stops easier, but the correct fuel grade still belongs in the rental checklist. Confirm diesel or petrol at the flap and keep the receipt.
For an electric car, save compatible chargers and payment methods before departure. A station icon does not show live availability.
Put breakdown contacts offline
Save the rental assistance number and KGM motorway help information. Leave the vehicle only when the location is safe and follow operator instructions.
Close the toll record after return
Photograph the final mileage, fuel or charge level, panels, wheels and return bay. Ask when delayed HGS charges can appear and keep the payment card active for that stated period.
Compare later charges with the KGM tariff and your route log. A rental administration fee can sit beside the road charge as a separate line.
Remove the plate from parking apps
Delete the rental registration after the final parking session. Check that no automatic renewal or wallet remains connected to it.
